Regan O’Neill was born in Cairns, Far North Queensland in 1976 and had a very active childhood including a variety of sports, sailing and camping trips with her family. In 1994 Regan took a gap year and studied her diploma of Visual Art full-time where she learnt to experiment with many different and varied techniques. It was during this time Regan was asked to hang some of her paintings in an art gallery which sold in a few days….. This was the start of her professional painting career.
In 1995 Regan held her first solo art exhibition at the age of 18 in a hair salon in Cairns, she recalls she had no idea what to expect and was over the moon when 15 of the 18 paintings sold at the opening. Since then, Regan has held fourteen solo exhibitions with her most recent being at the Reef Hotel Casino in Cairns in 2016.
Regan participates in many group exhibitions every year where she has claimed many awards including her two favourite, Grand Champion of the Cairns Show and 1st place in the Annual Cairns Art Society Exhibition at the Cairns Regional Gallery. Over the years, Regan’s paintings became popular in North Queensland with her use of bright colours and fun subjects such as flowers, beaches, reef fish, sailing boats and abstract compositions attracting repeat buyers from interstate and overseas. People from all over the world have bought her paintings including actress Eva Mendes and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.
Regan’s work constantly changes as she experiments using different techniques, always searching for new inspiration and creative ideas. Her three favourite artists are Ken Done, Brett Whitely and Tania Heben (all Australian) and her house is filled with prints of their work, her favourite being two small original paintings by Ken Done. Regan has met with Ken Done (Sydney) and Tania Heben (Port Douglas) providing inspiration, extensive knowledge and sharing ideas for her work and career.
In 2012, Regan moved to Brisbane to follow her dreams and pursue a full-time career in art. It was a very exciting time launching her gallery and art studio in Teneriffe, holding her first solo exhibition in Brisbane and teaming up with fashion designer Rebecca Richardson to create her clothing label ‘Tangella’ with the fabric print inspired by her artwork.
“My time in Brisbane really was an amazing experience, I learnt so much and met some incredibly, talented people including Camilla Franks (Australian fashion designer) who encouraged and inspired me. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family and friends”.
Regan now lives in her home town of Cairns in Far North Queensland, surrounded by tropical beauty and endless inspiration, she paints from her home studio in her spare time with views across the Cairns Inlet and works as a real estate agent at RE/MAX Cairns.
